Japan: Decomposing Whale Carcass Discovered on Hokkaido Coastline

A dead humpback whale measuring 8 to 10 metres was discovered washed ashore in Samani Town, Hokkaido, Japan, on May 26. The decomposing carcass will be buried nearby, with residents warned to keep away.

MATSUYAMA, Japan - A seven-meter-long whale is seen beached in Onishi, Ehime Prefecture, on Jan 12. Town and local coast guard officials, and firefighters joined hands in rescuing the whale. SHIZUOKA, Japan, April 7 Kyodo - Townsfolk in the Pacific resort of Osuka in Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan, watch a beached whale lie dead April 7 despite two-day efforts by the town's officials and volunteers to return it to deeper waters. A team of whale experts confirmed the 16-meter male sperm whale's heart stopped beating at 2:18 p.m.
